AN OVERVIEW OF CRACK DRUG FACTS

Crack gained popularity as a more affordable alternative to powder cocaine during the 1980s. Today, its potential for substance abuse continues, with an estimated 527,000 people using it within the past month, according to recent studies.[1]

Crack cocaine differs from powder cocaine in how it’s made. Manufacturers dissolve powder cocaine in a water mixture with ammonia or baking soda. The mixture is then boiled until it becomes a solid. This is dried and broken to make the chunks or rocks known as crack.

Smoking crack cocaine is the most common form of consumption. This provides an almost immediate and vivid euphoric effect. As the smoke hits the lungs, the large surface area is a direct pathway into the bloodstream and to the brain. Crack is a Schedule II substance, meaning it has a high potential for misuse; misuse of Schedule II substances can cause severe physical or psychological dependence along with mental health concerns.[2]

Street names for crack include Candy, Cookies, Gravel, Grit, Hail, Nuggets, Purple Caps, Scrabble, and Yam.

Crack Vs. Cocaine: What’s The Difference?

Along with methods of manufacture, crack, and cocaine differ in the method of use and color. The intensity and duration of its effects are also vastly different.

  • Method of use: Cocaine is mostly snorted, though it can be smoked or injected if mixed with water. Crack is only smoked.
  • Color: Crack can range in shades of brown, including tan and light brown, to cream and white. Cocaine powder is usually white or off-white.
  • Intensity of effects: Crack has a more intense but shorter high, while snorted cocaine has a less intense but longer-lasting high.
  • Timing of effects: The effects of snorted cocaine begin within five minutes, peak within 30 minutes, and fade within 1 to 2 hours. The effects of crack begin within one minute, peak within five minutes, and go away within 30 to 60 minutes.

Medication-Assisted Treatment For Crack Dependence

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) uses medications, counseling, and therapy to treat substance use disorders and promote sustainable recovery. This intervention is managed at our treatment facility under the care and supervision of trained healthcare providers and therapists. Our medications and intervention methods are evidence-based and customized to meet the individual needs of you or your loved one.

Although there aren’t any FDA-approved specific medications available for crack dependence like there are for alcohol or opioids, research is ongoing and promising.[3] Robust over-the-counter pain relief medicines are used to manage withdrawal symptoms, and acute therapy helps reduce and manage cravings.

Crack Cocaine Treatment Options in Massachusetts For Safe Recovery

Substance abuse is different for each person, and so are the treatment programs at Refresh Recovery. Our team of licensed clinicians compiles the data from a thorough intake assessment to design a program best suited to meet your needs and situation.

  • Partial Hospitalization Program: Also called Day Program in Massachusetts, PHP in MA takes place 9 am to 3 pm during the week. It’s often used by clients who recently completed detox or an inpatient treatment program.
  • Intensive Outpatient Programs: Three levels of IOP in MA give you the flexibility to continue treatment but on your schedule around daytime or evening hours for three, four, or five days a week.
  • Outpatient Program: The last step before aftercare begins, this program features weekly meetings with your individual therapist. You’ll connect with resources and support options to use once outpatient ends.

HOW CRACK COCAINE TREATMENT AT REFRESH RECOVERY CAN HELP YOU OR A LOVED ONE OVERCOME CRACK DEPENDENCE

More than half — 55% — of people with cocaine-induced psychiatric symptoms have violent behaviors. And 68% to 85% of people experience paranoia. Because crack cocaine can create dependence after a single use, it’s often extremely hard for someone to overcome misuse without supervised detoxification and targeted professional support.

During their participation in crack cocaine addiction treatment in Massachusetts, many people find a sense of community through professional and peer support. Counseling focuses on discovering the why behind a crack use disorder and offering coping strategies and skills to help you or your loved one after their treatment plan ends.
