RECOVER IN COMFORT WITH MAT THERAPY

Substance use disorder affects many lives — yours and those around you. But it doesn’t have to stay that way. Medication-assisted treatment therapy in Massachusetts is an effective treatment for the whole patient and leads to long-term and sustainable recovery. Refresh Recovery & Wellness Centers provides a caring and supportive environment for you to lean into a healthier version of yourself.

WHAT IS MAT THERAPY IN MASSACHUSETTS?

Medication Assisted Therapy (MAT) is the use of medications that are FDA-approved to manage withdrawal symptoms while addressing your mental and behavioral health, two areas often at the root of a use disorder. Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) in Norwell, Massachusetts, uses evidence-based methods to provide short- and long-term recovery support based on your needs and situation. Many treatment centers offer inpatient and outpatient programs featuring MAT in MA.

Buprenorphine, methadone, and naltrexone are approved for use in MAT for opioid use disorder. Your doctor or healthcare provider will begin your treatment with the appropriate dose to alleviate and manage withdrawal symptoms. Over time, the dosage will slowly taper down until the medication intervention is no longer required.

WHO IS MAT THERAPY FOR?

Reducing or stopping drug use is often difficult, if not nearly impossible, without professional medical and therapeutic support. MAT therapy is an evidence-based treatment with a growing body of medical and scientific research that shows its effectiveness, especially for OUD and other substance use disorders or alcohol use disorders. And, when someone stays in MAT therapy, they have a much lower risk of a relapse and/or opioid overdose.

Unfortunately, most people who would benefit from MAT for an opioid use disorder — 72.2% — don’t receive the treatment. Access can be limited due to financial ability, few facilities and clinicians who use the treatment, and lasting stigmas around opioid dependence and medication.

HOW MAT THERAPY IN MASSACHUSETTS WORKS

MAT therapy works to uncover and rectify the underlying factors often found behind substance use disorder in a supportive and professional treatment facility. The therapy begins by working with a doctor or healthcare provider who prescribes an FDA-approved medication that will be most effective for your disorder. MAT medications are opioid agonists that block the opioid receptors and adjust your brain chemistry. Reduced cravings and other side effects of opioids occur as a result.

Another facet of MAT treatment is the behavioral therapies that go hand-in-hand. It may be done in one-on-one settings with an experienced counselor or in support groups with your peers. The type of therapy may include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, or others in a combination determined to best help you on your journey to recovery.

How Medication-Assisted  Treatment in Massachusetts Can Help

Medications during recovery help relieve withdrawal symptoms, making it easier for you to overcome the physical dependence on substances as your body navigates the detox process. Certain medications also help reduce cravings, making it easier for people to stick to their treatment plan and avoid relapse.

Studies have shown people who receive MAT are more likely to remain at the treatment facility and complete the program compared to only receiving behavioral therapy. People who receive MAT treatment improve their overall physical and mental health, leading to a better quality of life.

Undergoing MAT treatment can also reduce the risk of overdose and death, especially for individuals with opioid use disorders, once they begin outpatient and aftercare.

MAT Therapy in Massachusetts Vs. Medical Detox in MA

Medical detox is short-term and focuses on physical stabilization, while MAT is a longer-term approach to address addiction’s physical and psychological aspects.

Medical detox helps you overcome the physical dependence on a substance. The goal is to manage withdrawal symptoms and help you become physically stable. It typically takes place in a treatment facility under the supervision of medical professionals and lasts from several days to a few weeks.

MAT combines medication with behavioral therapy to help you overcome substance use disorders. The goal is to not only manage withdrawal symptoms but also address underlying psychological, social, and behavioral factors that contribute to substance use. MAT typically lasts several months to a year or more and involves regular appointments with a doctor and therapists.

MAT TREATMENT OPTIONS FOR A SAFE AND COMFORTABLE RECOVERY

Opioid treatment programs range in intensity and scope to meet the varying needs of patients. At Refresh Recovery, our treatment providers combine evidence-based methods with years of training and experience to ensure your needs are met.

For patients who need the most support, including ongoing healthcare after detox, the Partial Hospitalization Program provides one-on-one care during the week at the treatment center. For patients who have families and/or jobs to take care of, the Intensive Outpatient and Outpatient Programs allow them to receive comprehensive care but with flexibility for their schedules.

MAT THERAPY TIMELINE

The timeline for MAT can vary greatly from person to person, and some individuals may need to continue medication for a longer timeframe to maintain their recovery. The ultimate goal is to help individuals achieve and maintain long-term sobriety.

Assessment: The first step is a comprehensive evaluation to determine your substance use history, current physical and mental health status, and any co-occurring medical or psychiatric conditions.

Stabilization: After the assessment, you may undergo a medical detox to manage withdrawal symptoms and become physically stable. During this stage, you may be prescribed and begin taking medication to help with cravings and other withdrawal symptoms.

Maintenance: During this stage, you continue to take medication and participate in outpatient behavioral therapy, such as individual and group therapy, support groups, and other forms. The goal is to help you develop new coping skills and maintain sobriety.

Tapering and Discontinuation: As your health improves and you become more stable, the medication may be gradually reduced or tapered until it’s no longer needed. At this stage, you should continue participation in behavioral therapy and support groups to maintain progress.

Aftercare: After discontinuing medication, it’s usually recommended that you continue to participate in aftercare programs to prevent relapse and maintain recovery.

BENEFITS OF MEDICATION-ASSISTED TREATMENT PAIRED WITH BEHAVIORAL THERAPY

Behavioral therapy digs deep into the underlying and unresolved issues and trauma that are often a driving force to substance use disorder. What the issues are are as individual as the person, which is why our providers use a customized but comprehensive approach to therapy.

You or your loved one may participate in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy along with Motivational Interviewing and family support groups. Or, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and group therapy may be most effective for your situation and needs.

There isn’t one benefit that outweighs another when you or your loved one undergo MAT paired with behavioral therapy. Each benefit augments another, and all lead to improved outcomes, improved overall health, and fewer overdoses and fatalities linked to substance use disorder.

  • Improved recovery outcomes: Studies have shown people who receive MAT combined with evidence-based behavioral therapy are more likely to achieve and maintain sobriety compared to those receiving medication or therapy alone.
  • Reduced cravings and withdrawal symptoms: Medications used in MAT help relieve withdrawal symptoms and reduce cravings, making it easier to overcome physical dependence.
  • Better program completion: People who receive MAT and behavioral therapy are more likely to remain in treatment and complete the program compared to those who only receive behavioral therapy.
  • Address underlying psychological and behavioral factors: Behavioral therapies help you identify and address the underlying psychological and behavioral factors contributing to substance use, leading to a more comprehensive and effective treatment outcome.
  • Improved overall health: By overcoming substance use disorders and addressing the underlying psychological and behavioral factors, people who receive MAT and behavioral therapy can improve their overall physical and mental health, leading to a better quality of life.
  • Decreased risk of substance overdose and related fatalities: MAT can also reduce the risk of overdose and death, especially for people with opioid use disorders. Behavioral therapy teaches people to develop new coping skills to prevent relapse.
