THE CONNECTION BETWEEN MENTAL HEALTH AND SUBSTANCE USE
According to a recent survey on drug use and mental health by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), they estimated that over 9 million U.S. adults have a co-occurring disorder. The scientific data suggests that some mental illnesses are associated with established risk factors for an increased likelihood of developing a substance use disorder.
While a mental health disorder doesn’t cause a substance use disorder, the risk is higher as the client may attempt to self-medicate with substances. This leads to intensifying symptoms and dangerous health concerns.
WHY CO-OCCURRING DISORDER TREATMENT IN MASSACHUSETTS IS ESSENTIAL FOR SUCCESSFUL RECOVERY
In order to facilitate the best possible treatment outcomes, it’s essential to gain a deeper understanding of each client. Mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, and personality disorders have been shown to respond positively to substance use treatment, as well as physical conditions that require pain management and lifestyle changes.
A holistic approach allows providers to offer targeted and integrated support that treats the whole person. Therapeutic approaches are effective at helping you manage physical and psychological symptoms in addition to the associated substance use. With comprehensive therapy interventions administered by highly experienced providers, we can ensure each client gets the level of care they need.
COMMON CO-OCCURRING DISORDERS
Mental health issues cover a wide range of diagnoses, symptoms, and disorders. However, some of the more common ones we see include depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), eating disorders, mood disorders, and schizophrenia. If you or a loved one is suffering from any of these concerns and is also struggling with substance use, you’re in the right place at our drug & alcohol treatment facility in MA.
WHAT DOES DUAL DIAGNOSIS TREATMENT IN MASSACHUSETTS LOOK LIKE?
Treatment for a dual diagnosis requires a holistic approach that addresses the whole person, mind, body, and spirit. Through every level of care, our clinicians will walk you through behavioral health interventions, therapy sessions, and group support with personalized attention.
Medical Detox Placement
Recovery from substance use may be more difficult with the presence of mental disorders, but it is the critical first step to experiencing freedom and healing. Detoxification releases harmful substances from the body and works through the physical effects of dependency. You will be fully supported by a skilled team of providers with medication-assisted therapy to alleviate the symptoms.

Medication Management
Medication case management is an integral part of dual diagnosis treatment services here at Refresh Recovery. Our medical providers will review all medications and dosage schedules to monitor their effectiveness and keep track of any potential side effects. This process offers reduced mental health or withdrawal symptoms as you navigate recovery.
Group Therapy
Group therapy and peer support are critical and evidence-based components of recovery. These settings provide a safe space where you can learn from the personal experiences of other recovery-minded people and practice essential coping skills.
Individual Therapy and Mental Health Counseling
We are champions of individualized care at Refresh Recovery. Each client’s treatment plan will be complete with individualized treatment options customized to suit their needs.
From Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to mindfulness techniques, Motivational Interviewing, and Trauma-Informed therapies, our treatment team is here to support you and facilitate a successful recovery.
Benefits of Co-Occurring Disorder Treatment Programs
A co-occurring disorder treatment program offers both mental health treatment and substance abuse treatment in one comprehensive program. You will be better equipped to navigate interpersonal relationships, manage symptoms safely, and rely on practical coping skills for relapse prevention.
At Refresh Recovery, we’re here to help you establish a lifetime of successful recovery, not just a few days or weeks. Freedom is on the other side of treatment, and we can help you get there.
Partial Hospitalization Program
Our PHP program is a full-day program that occurs Monday through Friday from 9 am to 3 pm. This is a good fit for someone who has just graduated from inpatient treatment or completed a medical detox. Here you will have daily access to effective and compassionate support to help you navigate early recovery.
Intensive Outpatient Program
Our Intensive Outpatient Program in Massachusetts is a level of care just below PHP and offers three different paths. Depending on the needs of your individualized treatment plan, you will participate in IOP treatment 5, 4, or 3 days per week with the flexibility to maintain other responsibilities at work, home, or school.
